Celebrating People Who Make a Difference
Really?!! Journal · Oct 8, 2026

Community work is not always highly visible. It may look like organizing supplies, helping someone complete a form, maintaining a shared garden or reliably showing up when help is needed. Recognizing that work begins with noticing what people actually do, rather than searching for a dramatic story.
Be specific about the contribution
A meaningful thank-you names the action and why it mattered. Instead of calling someone amazing, describe the task they handled or the care they brought to it. Specific appreciation lets a person know their effort was seen, including the less glamorous work behind an event or project.
Notice teams as well as individuals. Public praise can accidentally overlook the people doing preparation, cleanup or ongoing support. Ask who else helped and make room for those names when recognition is welcome.
Ask before sharing someone else's story
Good intentions do not replace permission. Before posting a photograph, naming a person online or describing someone who received help, ask what they are comfortable sharing. Avoid exposing private circumstances to make the story more emotional.
Some people prefer a private note to public attention. Others may want recognition directed toward the organization or cause. Respecting that preference is part of celebrating their work, not an obstacle to it.
Turn appreciation into useful support
Ask what would make the work easier. The answer may be time, supplies, a specific skill or simply consistent participation. Do not assume every organization needs the same thing, and check its current requests before collecting items or inviting a group to help.
A nomination can also be thoughtful recognition. If you know someone whose community contribution deserves a conversation, explain what they do, whom it serves and how you know about it. Stick to details you can verify rather than adding a heroic biography.
This week, thank one person for one specific contribution. If you would like to share a community nomination with Really?!!, use the Get Involved page and describe the work in your own words. Appreciation is strongest when it honors the person, not just the story we want to tell about them.
